History

A fascinating resort is nicely located at the confluence of two powerful seas: Aegean and Mediterranean. It is surrounded be lush mountains where grow tall pines. Nowadays, hotels of Marmaris meet people who would like to have a wonderful rest and at full capacity feel its fresh atmosphere and breathe into the lungs pure air. Most of them are of urban type, and are four- or six-storey buildings with not a big territory, located in several lines parallel to the sea. It is considered that Marmaris is the youth resort, as things are really zipping along day and night at this place. Most hotels are concentrated in the city itself, a few of them have their own beaches, but all offer modern facilities. This is how this remarkable place looks today, but many centuries ago it was a small fishing village, and had another name Fiskos. In those years this place was famous for its trading tradition. In 334 BC it was conquered by the army of Alexander the Great, and then became a part of the Byzantine Empire; and later it was captured by the Seljuks and by the Ottomans.

In the 16^th century Sultan Suleiman restored the already devastated town’s walls, dating back to ancient times, and gave the city the name Mimaris, which after a while was turned into Marmaris. To our time survived a part of the old town on the slopes of the fortress Marmaris. Dilapidated houses on the narrow streets attract many travelers and are under the state protection. A walk through the old town will give you the opportunity to enjoy the unique architecture of the province of Mula. Many buildings are inhabited by the indigenous people of Marmaris.
